Career options after BA psychology in special education are wider than many graduates realise: you can work as a shadow teacher, a behaviour or therapy assistant under supervision, a remedial teacher once trained, or a special educator after a B.Ed Special Education. Becoming a psychologist who can assess children takes a longer, RCI-recognised route. This guide sets out the roles open with a BA or BSc in psychology, what you need for each, the clinical and rehabilitation routes, the ethical limits of a graduate's work, and how to build experience.
What can you do with a BA or BSc in psychology in special education?
A psychology degree gives you a grounding in child development, learning and behaviour that shows in how you observe a child. On its own, it does not qualify you to teach, assess or treat. The roles open to you straight after graduation are support roles, done well under supervision, and they are a very good way to discover which part of the field you want to build a career in.
The table sets out the main roles, what you need for each, and where the limits are. The limits matter as much as the openings, because families and schools will judge you partly on whether you know them.
| Role | What you need | What you can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow teacher | A degree plus training and supervised experience | Support a child in class within the school's norms; not teach a separate lesson or assess |
| Behaviour or therapy assistant | A degree and supervision by a qualified professional | Carry out plans written by others; not design programmes or change them alone |
| Remedial teacher | Training in a structured method and supervised practice | Teach reading, writing or maths skills; not diagnose a learning disability |
| Early intervention assistant | A degree plus training in the setting | Support young children under supervision; not run assessments |
| Special educator | An RCI-recognised B.Ed Special Education and CRR registration | Plan and teach individually as a registered professional |
| Clinical or rehabilitation psychologist | An RCI-recognised professional qualification and registration | Assess and provide psychological services within their scope |
Can a psychology graduate work as a shadow teacher?
Yes, and many do. There is no licence or RCI category for shadow teachers, so families and schools decide whom they accept. A psychology graduate who has trained in classroom support and done a term or two of supervised practice has a strong case, because they understand behaviour and development and can learn the classroom side.
What the degree does not give you is classroom craft: prompting without taking over, working beside a class teacher of 40 children, handling the tiffin break and the school van, keeping a daily note. How to become a shadow teacher in India covers the routes and the checks families will make.
Be clear with yourself and with families that you are not a psychologist in the sense they mean. Never offer a view on a diagnosis, even when a worried grandparent asks.
How does a psychology graduate become a special educator?
At the time of writing (September 2026), RCI's norms for the B.Ed. Special Education accept graduates with at least 50% in a bachelor's or master's degree in the sciences, social sciences or humanities, which includes psychology. The course takes two years, with specialisations such as autism, learning disability and intellectual disability. RCI stopped approving new institutions for the two-year course from 2024-25, but existing programmes are still listed.
Once qualified, you register on RCI's Central Rehabilitation Register, which is what lets you practise as a special teacher under the RCI Act. How to become a special educator in India covers the course choices, integrated routes and registration in detail. Check the current rules with RCI or the institution before you apply.
What about ABA and behaviour work?
Many psychology graduates are drawn to applied behaviour analysis. Be aware of how the credentials work for someone living in India. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board, which issues the BCBA, BCaBA and RBT credentials, has since 1 January 2023 accepted new applications only from residents of certain countries. At the time of writing (September 2026) India is not among them, so a resident of India cannot apply for a new BCBA or RBT.
Other international credentialing bodies exist, but none of their credentials is an Indian statutory licence, and ABA is not regulated by RCI. You can still work as a behaviour assistant under the supervision of a qualified professional, carrying out plans they design. Ask any employer who supervises your work, what their own qualification is, and how often they observe you.
Who does what among the professionals around a child explains where the behaviour analyst fits alongside the special educator and the psychologist.
What are the routes to becoming a clinical or rehabilitation psychologist?
To assess children and provide psychological services, you need an RCI-recognised professional qualification and registration. Clinical psychologists are one of RCI's registered categories. The routes have changed recently. The UGC allowed M.Phil admissions in clinical psychology and rehabilitation psychology only up to 2025-26. RCI introduced a two-year Master in Clinical Psychology (M.Clin.Psy.) from 2024-25 in place of the M.Phil, with entry after a four-year BA or BSc in psychology, or a three-year degree plus a bridge year or the first year of a master's, with at least 55%.
RCI also runs a four-year Bachelor in Clinical Psychology. Its graduates work as a first tier under the supervision of master's-level clinical psychologists and may not carry out complex or certification assessments on their own. Rehabilitation psychology has a similar structure, with courses renamed in 2026. Holders of the PG Diploma in Rehabilitation Psychology under the revised syllabus register as rehabilitation counsellors, not rehabilitation psychologists.
These rules are new and some details are still settling, so confirm the current course names, entry rules and registration titles with RCI before you plan.
Where does counselling psychology fit?
Counselling psychology is a popular master's choice, and it leads to useful work, including in schools. But a general MA or MSc in counselling psychology is not one of RCI's registered qualifications, and counselling psychologists are not one of its registered categories. At the time of writing, RCI has mentioned a planned counselling category for clinical psychology bachelor's graduates, but whether it has been implemented is not confirmed.
If your aim is to assess children for learning disabilities, autism or ADHD, a counselling degree alone will not qualify you. If your aim is to support children's wellbeing in schools, it may suit you well. Decide which you want before choosing a master's.
What must a psychology graduate never do?
The most important ethical line for a graduate is simple: you do not assess, diagnose or run psychological tests. Under the RCI Act, practising as a rehabilitation professional, which includes clinical psychologists, is limited to people with a recognised qualification who are registered. Families sometimes ask a graduate to "just check" whether a child has dyslexia or autism, and saying no clearly protects the child, the family and you. Point them instead to how a learning disability assessment works in India, which explains who carries one out.
- Do not administer or score standardised psychological tests, even if you learned about them in your degree.
- Do not tell a family what you think the diagnosis is, or whether you agree with one.
- Do not call yourself a psychologist, child psychologist or counsellor in job applications or on social media.
- Do not change a clinician's or therapist's plan; report what you see instead.
- Do work under supervision, and ask when you are unsure.
- Do refer families to a clinical psychologist, developmental paediatrician or child psychiatrist when they have questions you cannot answer.
How do you build experience and a portfolio?
Your first two or three years matter more than any single certificate. Choose roles with good supervision over roles that pay a little more with none, and keep evidence of your work that identifies no child.
- Take a support role with supervision: shadow teaching, assisting in a resource room, or an early intervention setting.
- Train in the practical skills your degree did not cover, such as classroom support or structured literacy.
- Keep an anonymous log of what you did, what changed and what you learned.
- Collect references from supervisors and families who saw you work over a full academic year.
- Decide, with that experience, whether you want to teach, work in behaviour support, or train as a psychologist.
- Then choose the recognised qualification that fits, and check RCI's current rules before enrolling.
Special Minds runs a practitioner programme with structured training and supervised practice for shadow teachers and special educators; it is not a therapy or psychology qualification and does not promise work. The practitioner pages explain how placements with families work.
Questions
What are the career options after BA psychology in special education?+
Graduates can work as shadow teachers, supervised behaviour or therapy assistants, early intervention assistants, and remedial teachers once trained. With a B.Ed Special Education and RCI registration you can become a special educator. Assessing children as a psychologist needs an RCI-recognised professional qualification.
Can a BA psychology graduate become a shadow teacher?+
Yes. There is no licence for shadow teachers, and a psychology degree gives a useful grounding in behaviour and development. Families and schools will also expect classroom training, supervised experience and references, and they will expect you not to comment on diagnoses.
Can a psychology graduate assess a child for dyslexia or autism?+
No. Assessment is done by qualified professionals such as clinical psychologists registered with RCI, or by hospital teams. A graduate should not run standardised tests or suggest a diagnosis, and should refer families to the right professional instead.
Can I become an RBT or BCBA in India?+
Not as a resident of India. Since 1 January 2023 the certifying board has accepted new applications only from residents of certain countries, and India is not one of them. You can still work under supervision in behaviour support.
Is a counselling psychology master's registered with RCI?+
A general MA or MSc in counselling psychology is not one of RCI's registered qualifications, and counselling psychologists are not a registered category. It can lead to good work in schools, but it does not qualify you to assess children for learning disabilities or autism.
Which RCI course should a psychology graduate choose?+
It depends on your goal. For teaching, the B.Ed Special Education is the usual route. For assessment and psychological services, look at RCI's clinical psychology or rehabilitation psychology qualifications. Check the current names and entry rules with RCI, since they changed recently.
Special Minds introduces and supports educational and care professionals. Nothing here is medical, psychological or legal advice, and the terms of any placement are set out in your written agreement, which you should have reviewed by your own adviser. Rules set by schools, boards and government bodies change; confirm the current version with the body concerned.
