Shadow teachers and special educators in Lanka.
For families in Lanka and the BHU side of Varanasi, from Assi to Sunderpur: online remedial tutoring now, and a shadow teacher or special educator in person on request.
Lanka, Varanasi
Lanka grew up at the main gate of Banaras Hindu University, and much of its life follows the campus: teachers and doctors at the university hospital live here alongside long-settled families and the students who rent rooms in its lanes. Some households are here for a few years, others for generations. Remedial tutoring with a vetted tutor can start online now. A shadow teacher or special educator in person is something we arrange on request, where the right professional can be found and verified near you, and we say plainly before you commit whether we can. Each professional's qualifications are checked with the awarding institution, two or more referees are spoken to, and there are two interviews. The school is contacted before any shadow teacher is placed, and reviews at one week, thirty days and ninety days come with daily notes and a monthly report.
Families on the BHU side mostly use CBSE schools, including some on or close to the campus, along with UP Board schools teaching in Hindi and ICSE schools elsewhere in Varanasi. At the time of writing, October 2026, CBSE considers concession requests only when the school has entered them on its online CWSN portal with its list of candidates, before a fixed deadline. Academic families sometimes move on to a post abroad or to an international school in a larger city; if that is likely, keep a recent, detailed psychological report, because Cambridge and IB programmes do not accept a UDID card alone. Special Minds does not assess; a psychologist or hospital does. Confirm the current rules with the school.

The commute and the languages.
The crossing at Lanka, outside the university's main gate, is crowded for much of the day, with students, patients heading to the university hospital, e-rickshaws and buses all meeting there, and the roads north through Durgakund and Bhelupur towards the city centre are narrow and slow. With no metro in the city, practitioners come by two-wheeler, auto or e-rickshaw. Heavy monsoon rain floods low-lying streets, and winter fog slows early mornings. Someone living in Lanka, Assi, Sunderpur or on the campus side of Durgakund is who we look for first when in-person help is requested. Where that is not possible, online sessions give your child a fixed weekly slot that no traffic jam can cancel.
Hindi is spoken in most Lanka homes, and English is common among university families, some of whom use it with their children as the first language. Bhojpuri is the language of the surrounding countryside, and staff and students from across India bring Bengali, Telugu, Malayalam, Maithili and more. A child of two academics may be fluent in English, hesitant in Hindi and expected to pass both. Tell us which language your child reads most comfortably, and which subject or script worries you most.

Questions from Lanka families
We live near the BHU gate. Could a special educator come to us in person, and how soon?+
It is possible, and we will be straightforward about it. In Varanasi, special educators in person are arranged on request: we look for a vetted professional who lives on this side of the city and can keep a fixed weekly timetable, check their qualifications and referees and interview them twice. We cannot name a start date until that is done and you have met them, and if no one suitable is nearby we tell you before you commit. Online remedial tutoring can begin in the meantime.
We both work shifts at the hospital. Can sessions fit around our rotas?+
Usually, if the slot is fixed for the child rather than for the rota. Children who find learning hard do best with the same days and times each week, so it helps to agree who will be at home for each session, a grandparent or a carer if not a parent. Online sessions make this easier because nobody travels, and the tutor's notes reach you after each session, whatever shift you are on.
There are many students around us. Could one of them tutor our child?+
Only if they meet the same standard as anyone we introduce: a relevant qualification we can verify, at least two references and two interviews. Knowing a subject well is not the same as knowing how to teach a child who finds reading or numbers hard. If a student you already know is helping with homework, that can continue; a remedial tutor works alongside, and the written plan tells everyone what to practise.
