The cost of a shadow teacher in India depends on a handful of things you can name in advance: how many hours a day and days a week, the professional's qualification and experience with your child's need, your city and the daily commute, and whether the same person also works with your child at home. Two families in the same school can be quoted very different amounts for good reasons. This guide explains what drives the fee, what an agency adds, the costs that catch families out, and how to compare quotes fairly.

Why is there no single price for a shadow teacher?

A shadow teacher is not a standard product. One child needs someone beside them for a four-hour pre-primary day; another needs a qualified special educator for a full secondary-school day, followed by two hours of structured work at home. One family lives ten minutes from the school; another is across the city from it. Each of these changes who is available, how long they will stay and what they will reasonably ask to be paid.

That is why a single figure quoted before anyone has heard about your child tells you very little. A useful quote is one written against a description of the role: the hours, the school's terms, the child's needs and what the family expects from reporting and supervision. How to hire a shadow teacher in India explains how to write that description.

What decides the cost?

These are the factors that move the fee most, roughly in order of how much they matter.

  • Hours and days: school hours only, or school hours plus a session at home in the afternoon, five days a week or fewer.
  • Qualification: a diploma or degree in special education, or a related degree in psychology or education, usually commands more than experience alone.
  • Experience with your child's specific need, and in a classroom like your child's.
  • What the role involves: personal care for a younger child, close supervision for safety, or carrying a therapist's detailed plan all ask more of the professional.
  • City and commute: long daily journeys in large cities narrow the pool and raise what people ask for.
  • Languages: a professional who can work in English with the school and in the home language with the household is harder to find.
  • Commitment: a full academic year, including exam weeks, trips and annual day, costs more than a short arrangement but is far better for the child.

Notice that the child's diagnosis is not on the list. The cost follows the role, and the role follows what your child needs in the classroom, which two children with the same diagnosis may need very differently.

Direct hire, referral or agency: what are you paying for?

Families find shadow teachers in three main ways. The price differs, and so does what the price buys.

Three routes to a shadow teacher
RouteWhat you pay forWhat you getThe risk
Referral from another parent or a centreThe professional's payA name someone trustsNobody has checked qualifications, identity or references, and there is no replacement if it fails
Direct hire from a listingThe professional's payMore choice, lower costYou do all the vetting, the school coordination and the supervision yourself
Specialist agencyThe professional's pay plus the agency's feesVerified candidates, a shortlist, coordination with the school, reviews and a replacement if it failsHigher cost; quality varies by agency, so ask what was actually verified

Whichever route you choose, the checks do not disappear; the question is only who does them. How to verify a special educator's qualifications lists them, so that you can either do them yourself or ask an agency to show you it has.

The costs families forget to budget for

The monthly figure is rarely the whole cost. These are the items that most often surprise families in the first year.

  • The trial period, which should be paid, and the overlap if an outgoing shadow teacher hands over to a new one.
  • School holidays: whether the shadow teacher is paid during breaks, and what it will take to keep the same person for the next session.
  • Cover when the shadow teacher is ill or on leave, because many schools will not let the child attend without support.
  • Travel for school trips, sports fixtures and events outside school hours.
  • Any requirements the school sets for an external support person, such as an identity card, police verification or forms, and their cost in time and money.
  • The cost of starting again: a placement that ends in the third month costs another search, another trial and weeks of disruption for the child.

Settle each of these in writing before the first day. Most disagreements between families and shadow teachers are not about the monthly figure; they are about a holiday, a sick week or a trip that nobody discussed.

How to compare quotes fairly

Quotes are only comparable when they answer the same question. Use this order.

  1. Send every agency or candidate the same written brief: hours, days, school terms, the child's needs and what you expect from reporting.
  2. Ask what the fee includes: vetting, the shortlist, the school conversation, reviews, reports and a replacement if the placement fails.
  3. Ask to see the verification trail for any candidate you are offered: who checked the qualification, which referees were spoken to, when.
  4. Ask how the placement is supervised after the first day, and who the shadow teacher can call when something is wrong.
  5. Ask about the payment schedule, notice periods on both sides and how the arrangement ends.
  6. Only then compare the totals, over a full academic year rather than a single month.

When the cheapest option costs the most

The most expensive shadow teacher is the one who leaves in November. A child who has spent two months getting used to one adult has to start again with another, the school's patience is tested, and the family pays for a second search and a second trial. Placements usually fail for predictable reasons: a commute nobody thought through, a role that was never written down, a professional with no one to turn to when the work gets hard, or a mismatch between the candidate's experience and the child's needs.

Most of those failures are prevented by things that cost money up front: proper vetting, a written role, a realistic commute, and supervision with regular reviews. When you compare a cheaper arrangement with a dearer one, ask which of these the cheaper one leaves out, and what it would cost you if that part went wrong. What a good monthly report looks like shows the kind of supervision worth paying for.

School and home: one person or two?

Many families arrange a shadow teacher for the school day and, separately, a special educator or tutor for the afternoon. It can be better value, and better for the child, to ask one person to do both. The same professional carries the same strategies, words and rewards from the classroom to the dining table, the family briefs one person and reads one report, and a qualified special educator will often take a full-day role with one family more readily than a school-hours-only one.

Whether it suits your child depends on the school's terms and on the child's stamina after school. The difference between the roles is set out in shadow teacher, special educator or remedial teacher, and what a good home session looks like in special educator at home: what to expect.

How Special Minds charges

Special Minds charges a placement fee and a monthly placement-management fee. Both are quoted on your family's brief and set out in writing before anything is signed, and nothing is payable before you have met a shortlist. The fee covers finding and verifying candidates, the school conversation before the first day, reviews at one week, thirty days and ninety days, the monthly report and a replacement guarantee. Practitioners are never charged to be placed.

If you would like a quote, start a brief. It is a private conversation first, and it costs nothing to ask. Families in particular cities can also read about shadow teachers in Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru.

Questions

How much does a shadow teacher cost per month in India?+

It depends on the hours, the professional's qualification and experience, your city and commute, and whether the role continues at home after school. Ask for written quotes against the same description of the role, and compare what each includes as well as the monthly figure.

Is a shadow teacher paid during school holidays?+

That is for the family and the shadow teacher to agree in writing before the start. A shadow teacher who is unpaid through a long break may take other work, so families who want the same person in the new session usually agree an arrangement for the holidays.

Why does an agency cost more than hiring a shadow teacher directly?+

Because it does work a family would otherwise do or skip: verifying qualifications and references, interviewing, coordinating with the school, supervising the placement and replacing the professional if it fails. Ask any agency to show you exactly what it verified.

Does the school charge for allowing a shadow teacher?+

Practices differ. Ask the school whether it has any requirements or charges for an external support person, such as an identity card, a police verification or registration forms, and include them in your budget and your timeline.

Is it cheaper to have one person for school and home?+

Often it is better value, because a full-day role is more attractive to a qualified professional and the family manages one relationship instead of two. It depends on the school's terms and on how much energy your child has left after school.

What should a shadow teacher quote include?+

The hours and days, the school calendar, leave and holidays, what happens when the shadow teacher is ill, any trial period, reporting, notice periods and, if you are using an agency, vetting, supervision and replacement terms.
