A family home in Chennai

Shadow teachers and special educators in ECR.

Shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors for families along the East Coast Road, where distance shapes every placement.

ECR, Chennai

The East Coast Road runs south along the coast from Thiruvanmiyur towards Mahabalipuram, and the stretch closest to the city, through Palavakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam and beyond, has large independent houses, villas and gated communities. Many families here are in business or the professions, and some have returned from abroad. Homes are spread out, which makes the right professional harder to find than in the denser parts of Chennai. We introduce shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors to ECR families, check qualifications and references, and weigh each candidate's commute as carefully as their experience.

ECR and the areas just inland have several IB and Cambridge schools, along with CBSE and matriculation schools, and some families drive to schools in Adyar or on OMR. International schools here often have their own learning support staff. At the time of writing (September 2026), the IB asks for a professional report dated within three years, plus educational evidence, for exam access arrangements, and does not exempt students from studying two languages. A shadow teacher needs to know the school's own inclusion arrangements as well. Confirm details with the school's coordinator.

The commute and the languages.

ECR is a single long road with few alternatives, so a delay on it affects everyone travelling that way. Public transport is thinner than in the city, and most practitioners need their own two-wheeler or face a long bus ride. Candidates living in Thiruvanmiyur, Palavakkam, Neelankarai or along OMR are usually the realistic choices for a full academic year. For a combined school-and-home role, check the distance between the two carefully; homes further south can be a long way from the nearest candidate.

Tamil and English are the main languages in ECR homes, and returning families or those from other states may speak Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi or a language from abroad. Children in international schools are often English-first. Name every language the child hears at home in the brief, including the one the household staff use, since the professional will meet all of them.

How a placement works

Questions from ECR families

We live far down ECR. Can you still find a special educator?+

It is harder than in the city, and it may take longer. We look for candidates living as close as possible, often in Neelankarai, Palavakkam or along OMR, and we say plainly how far each would travel. Online remedial tutoring suits some needs, but a special educator at home usually needs someone nearby.

Can a shadow teacher from Adyar work at an international school on ECR?+

Yes, Adyar to the nearer part of ECR is a manageable trip for many practitioners, though traffic around Thiruvanmiyur slows it at school time. We ask each candidate about the route and whether they can keep it up for a full year, including the monsoon months.

Our ECR school has its own learning support staff. Do we still need a shadow teacher?+

That depends on the child and on the school. A learning support team usually covers several children, while a shadow teacher supports one child through the day. The school decides whether an outside shadow teacher is allowed, so we contact the school first and agree the arrangement.
