Families in India meet ABA credentials from three main bodies: the BACB, which issues the BCBA, BCaBA and RBT; IBAO, which issues the IBA and IBT; and QABA, which issues the QBA, QASP-S and ABAT. Some are for analysts who design and supervise programmes, others for therapists who deliver sessions under supervision. Because a resident of India cannot currently apply for a new BACB credential, and behaviour analysis is not a category on the RCI register, parents need to know what each credential is and how to check it. This guide sets the credentials side by side, explains the BACB residency rule and where Indian law stands, shows how to check a registry and covers what no credential can tell you.

Why are there so many ABA credentials?

Applied behaviour analysis is practised around the world, and several independent bodies certify the people who practise it. Each sets its own requirements, runs its own exams and keeps its own public list of who holds its credentials. In India the field has no national register of its own at the time of writing, so families see a mix: one analyst certified by a US-based board, a therapist certified by another body, a third person with a university certificate and no credential at all.

It helps to sort them into two levels. Analyst-level credentials belong to the person who assesses your child, designs the plan, supervises the team and reviews the data. Technician-level credentials belong to the people who deliver sessions day to day under that supervision. Think of it as the person who writes the plan and the person who carries it out each day: your child needs both, working together.

ABA credentials at a glance

The table lists the credentials you are most likely to meet. Requirements change, and each issuing body publishes a current handbook, so treat this as a starting point and confirm the details on the body's own website.

IBAO says it serves practitioners living outside North America and states no country restriction. QABA is accredited through ANSI/ANAB, offers its exams in several languages, offers adjusted pricing for developing countries and offers remote supervision; at least six India-based training providers appear on its list of pre-approved coursework providers. Within the BACB's credentials, analysts follow the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts, which took effect on 1 January 2022, and RBTs follow the separate RBT Ethics Code.

The BACB residency rule: why Indian residents cannot become new BCBAs

Since 1 January 2023 the BACB has accepted new certification applications only from residents of authorised countries. At the time of writing (October 2026) those are the US, Canada and Australia. The UK has been removed: its residents have been unable to apply since 1 January 2026, though people already certified there can keep recertifying. Australia stops new certifications on 1 January 2027. India is not on the list, so a resident of India cannot apply for a new BCBA, BCaBA or RBT.

People who already hold a BACB credential and live outside the authorised countries can currently keep it; asked about this, the BACB answers 'Currently, yes' and says the position may change. If a certification lapses, the person must live in an authorised country to reapply. The BACB also permits remote supervision within its Ethics Code and local law, so a BCBA may supervise a programme in India partly or wholly by video.

For parents, this has two practical effects. First, phrases such as 'BCBA-trained', 'BCBA coursework completed' or 'pursuing BCBA' do not describe a credential; only the registry shows who is certified. Second, you may meet therapists in India who hold an IBAO or QABA credential, or training without a credential, working under a BCBA's supervision. That can be a sound arrangement, provided the supervision is real and the supervisor can be checked.

What can each level do in your child's programme?

In a well-run programme the analyst assesses your child's skills, which is not the same as a diagnosis; works out why a behaviour is happening when one needs understanding; writes goals with you; designs the plan; trains and supervises the therapists; analyses the data; coaches parents; and coordinates with school and other professionals. Technicians and therapists deliver sessions as planned, record data and take questions back to the analyst. They should not be designing programmes or introducing new behaviour procedures on their own.

Some things sit outside every ABA credential. Diagnosing autism or any other condition is for a developmental paediatrician, child psychologist or psychiatrist. Speech and language therapy and occupational therapy are separate professions. Shadow teachers and special educators are educators, not therapists: they can carry strategies from the plan into school or home under the analyst's direction, which is what a shadow teacher working to an ABA plan does.

Where does Indian law stand on behaviour analysts?

At the time of writing (October 2026), the Rehabilitation Council of India recognises 16 professional categories, including clinical and rehabilitation psychologists, special teachers and speech therapists. Behaviour analyst is not one of them, and there is no RCI-approved course in behaviour analysis.

That does not mean Indian law ignores the profession. The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act 2021 lists 'Behavioural Analyst' in its schedule, under behavioural health sciences professionals. However, no national register for behaviour analysts is in operation at the time of writing. This may change, so check the current position with the National Commission before relying on it.

Meanwhile, some of the people around your child, such as psychologists, special educators and speech therapists, can be on the RCI register, and you can check that registration separately, as our guide to RCI registration explains. For an ABA credential, the issuing body's registry is the check.

How do you check an ABA credential, step by step?

Checking takes a few minutes and is worth doing for every provider, including one a doctor has recommended.

  1. Ask for the person's full name as it appears on the credential, the credential itself and the body that issued it.
  2. Go to that body's official website yourself: the BACB, IBAO or QABA.
  3. Search the registry. The BACB's Certificant Registry shows certification status and any reportable disciplinary action and is updated daily; IBAO's Directory of Certifications can be filtered by country; QABA's registry can be searched by name, country and credential.
  4. Check that the name, the credential level and the status match what you were told.
  5. If the person also says they are registered with the RCI, for example as a psychologist or special educator, check that separately.
  6. Save a dated screenshot, and check again when a new analyst or therapist joins your child's team.

If a provider cannot or will not give you a name you can check, ask why. An analyst supervising from another country can still be looked up on the registry of the body that certified them.

What a credential does not tell you

A credential shows that someone met a body's requirements and, on some registries, whether any disciplinary action has been recorded. It does not show whether they are kind to your child, whether they play, whether they notice when your child wants to stop, or whether they will share data with you. Those you learn by asking, observing and watching your child over the first weeks.

For BCBAs, the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts gives you a useful yardstick. Its core principles are benefiting others; compassion, dignity and respect; integrity; and competence. It asks analysts to 'act in the best interest of clients', to 'prioritize positive reinforcement procedures' and to obtain 'assent from clients when applicable'. You can ask any provider, whatever their credential, how they put each of these into practice. Our guide to assent-based ABA describes what that looks like in a session.

Where Special Minds fits

Every Special Minds ABA programme is designed and supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and delivered by trained ABA therapists. Ask us for the supervising BCBA's name and check it on the BACB's public registry; we would encourage the same check with any provider. More on how our programmes are set up is on ABA therapy in India.

Questions

Can I find a BCBA in India?+

Yes. People already certified by the BACB can currently keep their certification wherever they live, and the BACB permits remote supervision within its Ethics Code and local law. What a resident of India cannot do, at the time of writing (October 2026), is apply for a new BCBA. Check any BCBA on the BACB's Certificant Registry.

What is the difference between a BCBA and an RBT?+

A BCBA holds an analyst-level credential: the person who assesses, designs and supervises the programme. An RBT holds a technician-level credential and delivers sessions under a BCBA's supervision. Both are issued by the BACB, and both can be checked on its registry.

Is an IBA or QBA the same as a BCBA?+

No. They are analyst credentials from different bodies, IBAO and QABA, each with its own requirements, exams and registry; IBAO is not affiliated with the BACB. Rather than ranking them, check the credential on the right registry, read the issuing body's current handbook, and judge the person on supervision, ethics and how they work with your child.

How do I verify a BCBA certification?+

Ask for the analyst's full name, then search the BACB's Certificant Registry from the BACB's official website. At the time of writing, the registry shows certification status and any reportable disciplinary action, and is updated daily. Save a dated screenshot for your records.

Are behaviour analysts registered with the RCI?+

No. At the time of writing, behaviour analyst is not one of the professional categories on the Rehabilitation Council of India's register, and there is no RCI-approved course in behaviour analysis. The NCAHP Act 2021 names behavioural analysts as an allied health profession, but no national register for them is in operation yet.

Can a technician run an ABA programme without an analyst?+

Technician-level credentials such as the RBT, IBT and ABAT are designed for people who deliver sessions under an analyst's supervision. A programme run by a technician with no analyst designing and reviewing it is not a supervised ABA programme, whatever credential the technician holds. Ask who supervises, and check that person too.
