Shadow teachers and special educators in Howrah.
Shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors for families in Howrah, across the Hooghly from Kolkata, with professionals who can manage the river crossing.
Howrah, Kolkata
Howrah sits on the west bank of the Hooghly, a city in its own right, with one of the busiest railway stations in the country, a long industrial history of jute mills and engineering works, and old, closely built neighbourhoods such as Salkia and Shibpur alongside newer apartment complexes on its edges. Many families have lived here for generations, often in joint households, and many parents cross the river to work in Kolkata each day, which makes dependable support close to home especially valuable. We introduce shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors to Howrah families, verify qualifications with the issuing institution, speak to at least two references and interview each candidate twice. We contact the school before a shadow teacher is placed, and review the placement at one week, thirty days and ninety days, with daily notes and a monthly written report.
Howrah families use West Bengal board schools teaching in Bengali, and some in Hindi or Urdu, together with CBSE and ICSE schools in Howrah and, for some children, schools across the river in central Kolkata. A child who reads Hindi at home and Bengali at school is working across two scripts as well as English. At the time of writing, October 2026, the West Bengal boards provide concessions such as extra time and a writer for candidates with a certified disability, and CISCE gives compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour; in both cases the school applies on the student's behalf. Confirm the current rules with the school.

The commute and the languages.
Getting into and out of Howrah means crossing the Hooghly by Howrah Bridge, Vidyasagar Setu or, further north, the bridges at Bally, and all of them slow down at office hours, with traffic around Howrah station heavy for much of the day. The Green Line metro now runs under the river from Howrah station to Esplanade, and ferries cross from the ghats to the Kolkata side, which gives practitioners from central Kolkata more than one way across. Even so, the most reliable choice for a full academic year is usually someone who lives in Howrah itself, in Shibpur, Salkia, Bally or Santragachi. A combined school-and-home role works best when both are on the same bank.
Bengali and Hindi are both everyday languages in Howrah, with Urdu in many families, and Bhojpuri or other languages from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in households that came to work in the mills and workshops. A child may speak one language at home, read another at school and hear a third in the street. Say in the brief which language the child understands best, and whether the professional needs to read Bengali or Hindi script to help with homework.

Questions from Howrah families
Can a special educator from Kolkata come to us in Howrah every day?+
Some can, by metro under the river or by ferry, but a daily crossing at peak hours adds up over a year, and the bridges are slowest when you most need them. We look first for candidates living in Howrah, and ask anyone from the Kolkata side to show how they would manage the route on an ordinary weekday.
Our child is in a Hindi-medium school in Howrah. Can we find a Hindi-speaking tutor?+
Often, yes. English is always guaranteed, and Hindi is widely spoken among practitioners in Howrah and Kolkata. Tell us the school's medium and board, and we confirm that each shortlisted tutor can read, write and teach in that language before presenting them, rather than taking it on trust.
Our child's school is across the river in Kolkata. Should the shadow teacher live in Howrah or near the school?+
Near the school, as a rule. A shadow teacher must arrive before assembly every day, and the river crossing is the least predictable part of any route. If the role also includes an afternoon session at home in Howrah, we look for someone who crosses the river in the right direction at the end of the school day.
