A family home in Kolkata

Shadow teachers and special educators in Salt Lake.

Shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors for families in Salt Lake's residential sectors, placed with the school's agreement and supervised from the first week.

Salt Lake, Kolkata

Salt Lake, officially Bidhannagar, was laid out as a planned township on filled-in marshland east of the old city, and its residential sectors are divided into lettered blocks of independent houses, many built by families who moved here a generation or two ago. Today those houses often hold grandparents whose own children have settled elsewhere, alongside younger families renting a floor to be near the offices of Sector V. On weekdays a child here may spend more of the day with grandparents than with parents. We introduce shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors to Salt Lake families after verifying qualifications, speaking to at least two references and interviewing each candidate twice. We contact the school before a shadow teacher is placed, review the placement at one week, thirty days and ninety days, and send daily notes and a monthly written report.

Families in Salt Lake use CBSE and ICSE schools within the township, West Bengal board schools in Bengali and English medium, and a smaller number of international programmes in Salt Lake and nearby New Town. Some children travel into central or south Kolkata to an older ICSE school the family has used for years. Because CBSE is common here, its process matters. At the time of writing, October 2026, CBSE takes requests for exam concessions only through its online CWSN portal, entered by the school with its list of candidates, and nothing can be added after the deadline. Ask the school in Class VIII or IX which documents it will need from you. Confirm the current rules with the school.

The commute and the languages.

Salt Lake's own sector roads are calm by Kolkata standards. The pressure points are the ways in: Ultadanga and the VIP Road side, Chingrighata on the EM Bypass, and the roads around Karunamoyee and Sector V when the offices fill and empty, which overlaps with the school run. The Green Line metro crosses the township with stations from Salt Lake Stadium to Sector V, which helps practitioners coming from Sealdah and the city side. A professional living in Salt Lake, Lake Town, Bangur Avenue or Kestopur is usually the steadiest choice for a full academic year. Because distances inside the township are short, a combined school-and-home role is often realistic here.

Bengali is the language of most long-settled Salt Lake households, and many grandparents speak little else at home, while parents may use English with the child. Families renting near Sector V often speak Hindi or a language from another state. Tell us who the child spends the afternoon with and what they speak, because a special educator who can explain a routine to a Bengali-speaking grandparent keeps the plan going after the session ends.

How a placement works

Questions from Salt Lake families

Our child spends weekdays with grandparents in Salt Lake. Can the special educator work with them?+

Yes. The brief names the grandparents as part of the plan, and the special educator shows them the same routines she uses, in Bengali where she speaks it. Daily notes and the monthly written report still come to the parents, so everyone works from the same record.

Can a shadow teacher from south Kolkata work at a school in Salt Lake?+

Some do, usually along the EM Bypass, but at school hours the drive can take far longer than the distance suggests, and the approach near Chingrighata is slow when Sector V is busy. For a year-long role we look first for candidates living in Salt Lake or the neighbourhoods just north of it, and ask anyone further away to walk us through their route.

Our child is in Class VIII at a CBSE school in Salt Lake. When should we think about exam concessions?+

Now is a sensible time. At the time of writing, CBSE considers concessions only through its online portal, entered by the school with its list of candidates, so the evidence needs to be in place before the school registers your child. Special Minds does not assess or certify; a psychologist or hospital does. Ask the school which documents it wants and by when.
