Chapter 1
What a child with dyscalculia usually needs
Number sense built first, with concrete materials before written symbols
Maths taught in small, sequenced steps, each one secured before the next
The language of maths made explicit, in English and in the home language
Calm around maths, which for many of these children has become the subject they dread
Chapter 2
How a shadow teacher or special educator helps
A remedial tutor or special educator for a child with dyscalculia goes back to the foundations the syllabus assumes: quantity, place value and what each operation means. They teach with objects, drawings and number lines before written sums, move in small steps, and check that each step holds before adding the next. They work to the psychologist's report, keep in touch with the maths teacher about what the class is covering, and report monthly on progress the child can see.
Chapter 3 · Where our role ends
Dyscalculia is identified by a clinical psychologist through a learning disability assessment, after formal schooling has begun. Any certificate for board concessions comes from a notified medical authority. Our tutors do not assess or certify; they teach to the report and to the school's plan.
Chapter 4
Your child's team, working as one
With your consent, we build the child-support profile with the school and with any therapist, psychologist or paediatrician already involved, so the professional arrives knowing the plan rather than guessing at it. Monthly reports go to you, and to them if you wish.

Not sure what your child needs yet?
Many families come to us before there is a diagnosis. Tell us what the school has said, and we will say plainly whether we can help, or whether a clinician should come first.
