Special needs support in Maharashtra.

Shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors for families in Mumbai and Pune, and online remedial tutoring for children elsewhere in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra

Maharashtra holds two of the cities we serve, a few hours apart and quite different in feel. In Mumbai a family may have a child in an ICSE school in the western suburbs, a therapist across the harbour in Navi Mumbai and a long school run in between. In Pune the schools are spread across newer neighbourhoods such as Baner, Kharadi and Hinjewadi, and many families have moved there for work. What both cities share is a state board with written concessions that name learning disability and ADHD, Marathi in the timetable, and the same public route to a disability certificate. Special Minds introduces vetted shadow teachers, special educators and remedial tutors to families in both cities, and offers online remedial tutoring across the state.

In person in Mumbai and Pune. Families in Nashik, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Solapur and elsewhere in Maharashtra can use online remedial tutoring.

Schools and boards.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education runs the SSC exam in Class 10 and the HSC in Class 12. At the time of writing (September 2026), its concessions rest on a state Government Resolution of 16 October 2018, which covers learning disability and names children with ADHD among the other conditions it includes. For a child with a learning disability it provides 20 minutes extra per hour, a writer as the medical certificate allows, a calculator in Class 10 and 12 for mathematics, accountancy, physics and chemistry, an oral exam in place of practicals, and up to 20 grace marks for a regular student who would otherwise fail. Many Mumbai and Pune families use CBSE, ICSE, IB or Cambridge schools instead, and each has its own rules. Confirm the current version with the school or the board.

Marathi is the state language and is taught in schools across boards in Maharashtra, so a child in a Mumbai CBSE or ICSE school often studies English, Hindi and Marathi together: three languages in two scripts. At home, Mumbai families may speak Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati or English, sometimes all four in one household. For a child with dyslexia or a language delay that is a real load, and the exemption routes differ by board. Ask the school early which languages your child can drop, and when.

Public support and paperwork.

Disability certificates in Maharashtra, as everywhere in India, are issued only through the UDID portal (swavlambancard.gov.in), by medical authorities the state notifies. A parent applies to the medical authority for the district where the family lives, or to a hospital where the child is being treated. For SSC and HSC concessions, the 2018 resolution asks for a medical certificate under criteria set by the state's Public Health Department, and the school may support the child while it arrives. The State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities can inquire into a complaint that a child's rights under the RPwD Act have been denied. Government and aided schools draw on the inclusive education support of Samagra Shiksha, and District Early Intervention Centres at district hospitals accept parents who refer their own young child. This is the position at the time of writing (September 2026); confirm it before you apply.

How a placement works

Questions from families in Maharashtra

Does the Maharashtra SSC board give exam concessions for ADHD?+

Yes, at the time of writing. The state's 2018 Government Resolution names children with ADHD among the conditions it covers, with 20 minutes extra per hour, a writer where the certificate supports it and an oral exam in place of practicals. Most other boards do not name ADHD, so check the current resolution with the school.

Does my child have to study Marathi in a Mumbai CBSE school?+

Marathi is taught in schools across boards in Maharashtra. Whether a child with a certified learning disability can be excused depends on the board's rules and the school, so ask the principal in writing which languages your child must study and what evidence an exemption would need.

Can a shadow teacher travel from Thane to a school in Powai?+

Often, yes. Thane and Powai look close on a map, but at school hours the drive can take far longer than the distance suggests. We look for a professional whose daily route fits your child's school timings, and we speak to the school before anyone is placed.

We live in Nashik. Can we get help without moving to Pune?+

For remedial tutoring, yes. Families elsewhere in Maharashtra can use online remedial tutoring with a vetted tutor, in English and, where the candidate pool allows, in Marathi or Hindi. Shadow teachers and home special educators are introduced in person in Mumbai and Pune, and in Nagpur on request, where we can find and verify the right professional nearby.
